Modern Ceiling Lighting - 25 Best Ideas
Before we consider the main options and ideas for lighting the ceiling, I would like to devote some time to the requirements that apply to this issue. It should immediately be clarified that these requirements apply not only to the layout itself fixtures, but also their design, as well as design features.
So, during electrical work, you must consider the following requirements:
- Light should be evenly distributed over the entire area.
- All lamps (or each specific group) must have the same power, light spectrum and backlight intensity. Otherwise, there will be no harmony and the interior will noticeably deteriorate.
- Lamps should be economical, bright and at the same time durable. The leaders in this case are LED lamp.
- If the ceiling lighting is hidden, the housing of the fixtures must be hidden in a special ledge.
- The design of the ceiling (or other products) should be combined with furniture and wall decoration.
- Light bulbs should not blind eyes. To create a soft “flood” backlight, point the lamp up. To create a bright light, the lamp should look down.
- All wires must be hidden. At flush mounted wiring the track is hiding under the walls. When the wire is open, it is necessary to hide it in special cable channels (most often this option is used when installation of electrical wiring in a wooden house and garage).
Most popular fixtures
Most often, for lighting the ceiling in the house and apartment can be used:
- chandeliers;
- Spotlights;
- directional light bulbs;
- LED and neon ribbons.
Consider the features of using each option.
Chandeliers are a classic way of lighting not only the ceiling, but the entire room. There are no special requirements for them, the only thing is weight. This is due to the fact that with connecting the chandelier some types of ceilings can not withstand the load and collapse (for example, drywall). The luminous flux of these products is rather diffused and bright, so in most cases one chandelier is enough for the whole room.The advantage of these devices is their versatility - you can easily make a two-level, flat ceiling and even inclined (if you use a pendant lamp on a chain) .
Spotlights are a modern option for lighting. They are external and built-in type. The first option better “floods” the surface with light. The products have many advantages, the main of which are simple installation and attractive appearance. The disadvantage is that some light sources can damage the surface when heated.This problem often occurs with stretch ceilings.
Directional lamps can illuminate a specific area, as their luminous flux is not scattered, but concentrated in one area. Most often, such products are used to visually change the area of a room. In addition, directional lamps can be used to illuminate certain areas of the room itself, for example, the working area of the kitchen.
LED and neon tapes have proven their worth when installation of concealed ceiling lighting. Products are placed inside the prepared cornice and act as decorative illumination of the perimeter of the room. Today, LED strips are commonly used in the kitchen, bedroom, hallway and living room. Due to high humidity, the bathroom is not suitable for these products.
You can also lighten the surface with shades, but they are rarely used. This is due to the fact that the luminous flux of the products has a small scattering radius, and the dimensions take up a lot of space.
Backlight Options
To date, there are many options for lighting the ceiling with your own hands. The main factor by which a suitable option is determined is the design feature of the surface. Recently used concrete, wood, suspended and suspended ceilings.
Suspension
It is a drywall construction, mounted on a frame of profiles. Most often used to illuminate a plasterboard ceilinginstallation of spotlights. Products can be installed in a spiral, along the contour and in a row (it all depends on the room). Lighting should be designed during repair, at the stage of creating the drywall frame, as at this time, care must be taken to lay the wires to the installation site of all the enclosures.
Also, for this option, chandelier fastening can be used, the main thing is only to choose the method of fixing products correctly. If the case is not heavy, it can be fixed to the concrete ceiling using a special hook dowel or butterfly dowel. For a heavier chandelier, it is necessary to provide for anchoring. LED strips are used if there is a special cornice for hidden lighting. In this case, the tape with the power supply fits into it entirely along the entire perimeter.
Tension
With lighting stretch ceilings, things are much more complicated. This is due to the fact that the PVC tape, which is actually stretched, has low mechanical strength and heat resistance. In other words, it is impossible to attach lamps to the film, because under such a weight, it will immediately tear. Even when creating a special mount, you still need to make sure that the lamp does not burn through the film. This problem may occur when using incandescent lamps and halogen.
Spotlights in this case have proven themselves most successfully, because they are attached to specially prepared seats, and the LEDs themselves practically do not produce heat. In this case, it is best to use outdoor products, as they have a remote light source. If a hook is already installed under the chandelier, then you can make the ceiling lighting using this lamp. All that will be necessary for you - even during the repair, cut a hole in the film for the wires, connect them to the chandelier and hide under the decorative cover that is provided in the kit.
When using LED strip, you can make a hidden illumination of the stretch ceiling. In this case, you still have to create a cornice under the tape slightly below the film level. The material for the design is chosen to your taste, but a simpler option is a polyurethane cornice. LED strip has proven itself for lighting multi-level ceilings, especially if combined with other types of fixtures, for example, with spotlights.
Hinged lamps are recommended to be installed on the walls, directing the luminous flux up.
We draw your attention to the fact that the lighting of a stretch ceiling has one feature. If the film is glossy, then all the bulbs will be reflected on its surface and, as you know, visually their number will double. Sometimes this consequence spoils the interior of the room. Reflection also affects the interior if the chandelier is dirty (it immediately displays) or if the LED strip is laid crookedly.
Concrete / wood
Lighting a wooden ceiling does not have special requirements, as is the case with concrete. Of course, a chandelier, like a directional light, in this case will feel confident, because the anchor (or dowel) will reliably "sit" in the ceiling. Stylish chandeliers are well suited for lighting the ceiling of wooden beams or trimmed with lining.
As for spotlights, then they are impractical to use, because installation work in a wooden ceiling will be significantly more complicated.
LED strip can be used, but the installation process is similar to the previous one - you need to think through and make a special curtain rod in order to do without a chandelier. In a wooden house in the country, you can even use wall lights pointing up, which will make a cozy atmosphere in the room.
Interesting ideas
In the end, I would like to provide some interesting ideas for installing lighting in each of the rooms.
The corridor
Very often, the corridor in the apartment is an uncomfortable room: narrow and elongated, or small, in which there is nowhere to even put a closet. In this case, visually correct the situation using design techniques. To illuminate the ceiling in a narrow long corridor, you can install along the entire path several bright spotlights directed strictly down, which will visually shorten the room,
If you need to vice versa, slightly increase the volume of the room, the products should be directed upward, as shown in the picture.
Kitchen
About kitchen lighting We spoke in detail in the corresponding article. As for the ceiling, it should be noted that it is best in this case to use several groups of spotlights and LED strip. The latter will increase free space and create a creative interior.
Bedroom
You can use anything you like to light the ceiling in the bedroom: from sconces to floor lamps. If the bedroom is small with a low ceiling - point the lamps up, illuminating the room from all sides. Such an idea will allow, as you know, to increase the volume of the bedroom.
A spacious bedroom can be reduced by using fixtures pointing strictly down the walls. In this case, the ceiling will be darkened and, therefore, lowered.
Living room
Very often, with the help of ceiling lighting in the living room create a "highlight" of the interior. For this, LED strips and spotlights are used, located in several rows.
Also in the hallway you can use designer chandeliers, hinged lamps and sconces directed up. For living room lighting in high-tech style, you can make a starry sky backlight, as shown in the photo above.
Bathroom
About bathroom lighting we also spoke, therefore we advise to study this material in detail.
The only thing I would like to note is to make sure that the bathroom has a bright light that will not contribute to casting a shadow from objects, otherwise the process of shaving, bathing and applying makeup will be significantly complicated. Bright lighting in the bathroom can be achieved using special fluorescent lamps in a waterproof housing.
