How to make electric wall heating?

Electric wall heating did not gain much popularity, like a heating system for a house or apartment. This is due to the many shortcomings of this idea, as well as the certain complexity of laying a heating cable (or film) on a vertical surface. Next, we will consider the technology of installing a warm floor on a wall and provide the main pros and cons of this option for heating rooms.

Weigh the pros and cons

Vertical room heating

So, from the disadvantages of wall insulation with an electric floor heating, the following can be distinguished:

  1. Poor heat transfer. Because the heating element will be in the wall, the heat must first pass through the finish layer (plaster or gypsum plaster sheets), after which only get to the room to be heated. Here the following picture is formed - the heating will capture only the first 15-20 cm from the surface and the heated air will rise to the ceiling. As a result, the heating will be inefficient and you will have to install other electric heaters.
  2. It is forbidden to put furniture and household appliances to the wall. Everything is also obvious here - any cabinets, refrigerators, televisions and shelves will interfere with the already weak heating of the room. In addition, direct exposure to heat can negatively affect both furniture (it will begin to dry out) and electrical appliances (overheating).
  3. Significant heat loss. Heat will be radiated not only inside the house, but also out (to the outside of the wall). It is impossible to lay down foil thermal insulation under an infrared film, so you yourself understand how this will reduce the heating efficiency.
  4. Decreased versatility of vertical surfaces. If at the time of installation of the underfloor heating you do not provide for special fasteners, then in the future, after finishing, you are unlikely to succeed without damaging the heating element hang the tv on the wall or even a picture.
  5. The shift of the dew point to the inside. One of the main drawbacks of electric wall heating. Typically, condensation builds up between a cold and a warm surface. If under normal conditions this occurs on the outside of buildings, then when laying a heating cable or film, the dew point will be approximately the middle of the wall. As a result, in winter it will freeze harder and more quickly collapse. In addition, the likelihood of mold and mildew will increase significantly.
  6. Increased energy costs. Electric warm walls are not the most economical heating system. Although the heating cable on a vertical surface can be laid with an increased pitch, all the same, the electricity consumption will be significant. And why is this necessary if the heating efficiency is quite low?
  7. Decorative wall decoration will last less. When electrically heating a vertical surface, there is no guarantee that after a few months your wallpaper will not peel off. In addition, if you choose the wrong solution when installation of underfloor heating under tile (for example, in the bathroom), it can fall off after the first heating season. You can not worry only if the walls are sewn up with drywall.

As you can see, there are a lot of shortcomings in such a heating system and they are all significant. We got acquainted with a lot of discussions on the forums and found only two main advantages of laying a warm floor on the wall:

  1. With vertical heating, dust will not spread throughout the room.
  2. Since the heating cable or infrared film is laid in the wall, the rooms will become more spacious.

Now you yourself can conclude whether it is possible to install a warm floor on the wall. If nevertheless you decide to use such an electric heating system, read on how to properly fix the heating cable and film.

Mounting technology

Cable heating

So, in order to make an electric heated floor on the wall with your own hands, you will need to perform the following steps:

  1. Insulate the inside of the surface with foamed polyethylene with a foil base.
  2. Fasten the metal mesh to the wall with dowels. Instead of a grid, you can also use a mounting tape, as in the photo below.Mounting tape
  3. Install the heating elements, fixing them mechanically.
  4. Connect the temperature sensor and thermostat. You do not need to connect wires to the 220 Volt network.
  5. Cover the so-called warm walls with a layer of rough plaster.
  6. When the first layer hardens, apply a finishing layer, putty on it and proceed to the decorative decoration of the wall.
  7. After 4 weeks, you can safely turn on the heating and check how effective it is.

We draw your attention to the fact that for laying tiles on a warm floor, you need to use special tile glue, otherwise after a while your decorative finish will simply begin to crumble.

If on top of cable heating of the walls you decide to make drywall finish, then the installation technology is even simpler. Instead of laying the tiles, you will need to assemble the frame from the profiles and sew it up with GKL sheets, after connecting all the elements of the circuit and installing the thermostat in a suitable place.

Infrared film

Installing an infrared warm floor on the wall is much easier. Usually this option is used on the balcony, which is finished with lining or plasterboard plates. In this case, you must take into account an important nuance - it is strictly forbidden to use foil insulation. If you want to additionally insulate the loggia, it is better to find an alternative heat reflector without the use of foil.

Film coating installation

After laying the heat-reflecting layer, you need to make a frame for fixing the finish and fix the film coating in suitable places. Next, connect the wires and insulate the bare contacts. The last thing that remains to be done is to connect the temperature sensor and thermostat. After checking the heating system, you can turn it on immediately.

Consider an important nuance - tile adhesive should not be applied on top of the film coating. Laying infrared warm floor performed only "dry"!

That's all I wanted to tell you about how to make a warm floor on the wall with your own hands. We still recommend choosing an alternative heating option in a house or apartment, as such a system has more minuses than pluses!

Why can not I use foil insulation? What if he does not isolate everything tightly (wooden balcony)?

Why should the dew point suddenly shift inside the wall? The dew point is formed at the border of hot and cold.If you heat the room from the inside, then the dew point will shift outside the building. It is clear that the heating elements will be closer to the inside of the wall than to the outside, so it certainly won’t be worse.

Multiply and not strange, but perhaps strange. If the tape can work as a solvent or a reflector then the dew point will go inside. BUT, on the other hand, it will also heat itself, warm air will pass for it, the skin of the film will heat up and the wall will heat up. Here in the second case, a strange article

I think this is understandable to a fool. As I am not an experienced person, I decided to check this in other resources and decided that this article was a mistake. Or they think that the film itself will work as an internal insulation (reflector), it’s warm at home, and it’s cold behind the film and the dew point will move inside
