Selection of LED drivers for CREE XM-L2 U2 LEDs

Sergey asks:
Good afternoon. Need help selecting a driver for the LEDs. LEDs CREE XM-L2 U2 10pcs, white light.

  • DC Voltage (VF): 2.9-4V DC;
  • DC Current: 3.0A;
  • Power: 10 watts.

They will be connected in series. We need a driver for the LEDs to work at 60-70%. Maybe two drivers for 5 LEDs? Which is better?

The answer to the question:
Any driver can be used to connect the LEDs, if only it has enough output voltage limits and the desired current. They will glow exactly as much as you miss a current. To be honest, I did not see drivers for 2A, I came across only 1500 mA (1.5A) and 3000 mA).
Suppose you can power them with a current of 1500 mA, they will work at half the power. Then, according to the technical characteristics of your LEDs, the voltage drop across each LED will be 3.05V. So, for connecting LEDs, the driver must output more than this voltage (usually written, for example, 7-30V, 1500 mA).
How many drivers to use - it already depends on your technical solution. According to 1 driver, 5 LEDs are more reliable, in the sense that if 1 driver fails, half of the light installation will continue to work, it is even more reliable to use 3 drivers.
