What capacity does a capacitor need to plug it into a power outlet?
Hello. My son was at school today and he was shown how a capacitor is inserted into a power outlet. My son really wants to try this at home, but I'm not sure what capacity is needed for a 220 V capacitor, how many microfarads? Please help. Thanks in advance.
Hello! In general, a non-polar paper capacitor of about 2 microfarads of 400 volts is used for this. But remember - this is quite dangerous, there is a risk of getting an electric shock. Therefore, it is better not to indulge in electricity, and if there is a strong desire - you need to do it through a wire and a plug, and isolate the terminals of the capacitors. Again, these experiments are dangerous, so you do not need to repeat the experiments at home.
